Jazz Talk with Critic Ben Ratliff
Ran joins New York Times' jazz critic Ben
Ratliff at Brookline
Booksmith Thursday, November 20 for an
event promoting
Ben's new book, The
Jazz Ear.
For the book, Ratliff sat down with 15 jazz
luminaries (including Sonny Rollins, Ornette
Coleman and Hank Jones) to discuss
compositions that strongly influenced
them and how they listen to music. The
bookstore event will follow a similar
format, with Ben and Ran listening to and
discussing four or five key compositions in Ran's
life.
The event, which is free, goes from 7 to
8:30. The store is at 279 Harvard St., and
seating is on a first-come,
first-served basis.

First Day Room
Ran is gearing up for his annual fall student performance
at the New England Conservatory, which
focuses on the psychological thriller
Bunny
Lake Is Missing. The show, titled
First Day
Room (a reference to the site of a key
scene), falls on Halloween.
The evening will include scenes from the film
and musical and theatrical performances by
NEC Contemporary Improvisation students and
others, including 2006 grad
Alonzo Harris.
The 1965 film, directed by Otto Preminger,
tells the tale of a young mother, Ann Lake
(played by Carol Lynley), who claims she has
dropped her daughter Bunny off at a London
school for her first day. When Ann comes to
pick her up later in the day, Bunny is
missing. In fact, there is no evidence of her
ever having existed. Terrified, Ann relies on
her brother Stephen Lake (Keir Dullea) and
Detective Superintendent Newhouse (Laurence
Olivier) to solve the mystery of Bunny's
whereabouts -- or very existence.
The show, which is free, is at 8 p.m. at
NEC's Jordan
Hall.

Buffet Noir
Thai restaurant hosts pre-show shindig
As a warm-up to the Halloween concert, one of
Ran's favorite restaurants, Khao Sarn in
Brookline, is hosting "Buffet Noir," an
evening of food and wine on Wednesday, October
29.
The buffet is honor of Miss Bunny Lake, the
film's
4-year-old title character. Costumes are
encouraged,
especially those related to the film, and
musicians are invited to bring their
instruments and play a song or two. Attendees
also will view a few scenes from the
film.
The cost is $15. Khao Sarn is located at 250
Harvard St., a short walk from Coolidge
Corner. The event starts at 8:30 p.m. and
reservations are required. For more
information or to make a reservation, please
