Long Term Melodic Memory Course Description

Long-term memory enables us to synthesize elements from all of our musical and non-musical influences, enhancing the development of our unique personal voice. This class will challenge you in building long-term melodic memory skills, through memorization and recomposition exercises based on a diverse variety of repertoire.

Throughout the semester we will address such questions as: What is the process you use to memorize a melody? Do you rely on visual or aural aids (or both) when memorizing? Do you need to glance down at sheet music for a “hint” after you’ve memorized a piece of music? Is it easier to retain melodies that include lyrics? Are atypical forms or dissonant intervals more difficult to retain, or easier? Is your short-term memory/working memory more accurate than your long-term memory?
